Paul McCartney's voice echoed down the hallway, sending the mournful voice and guitar strums into Hakuba Saguru's room. It was a Beatle's night. Beatle's nights were usually introspective, melancholy nights.
One he would much rather be spending in his Grandfather's laboratory, if it were not for the fact that he was grounded for two weeks due to turning in a police report instead of his English homework. He supposed it was slightly his fault for filling out police work during English class. It wasn't like he -needed- to pay attention in class, but the personal lapse in judgment was appalling.
"All your life, You were only waiting for this moment to arise. Blackbird singing in the dead of night..."
"Wow. Someone's maudlin tonight." The unexpected voice from his window caused him to jump. The muffled yelp caught in his throat as he spun around to find himself face to face with the Kaitou Kid climbing through his bedroom window.
"Kid!" He hissed, quickly stalking over to the errant thief. "What are you doing here? Father is here too!"
"I know." Kid grinned at him, the cocky expression somehow oddly reassuring. "It's okay. Somehow, I get the feeling that he already knows you get an occasional late night visitor."
The song's volume suddenly increased. "Take these sunken eyes and learn to see. All your life, You were only waiting for this moment to be free..."
Hakuba blinked. His father had never shown any sign of knowing about his guest, other than that one incident with Kuroba in the kitchen.
But then his father hadn't gotten to his position by being stupid or unobservant either. It was possible that he knew Hakuba had a guest, if one knew what they were looking for, even the most careful cover up couldn't hide -everything-, but he sincerely doubted that his father knew exactly who his guest was.
For all he knew, it was Kuroba stopping by for late night antics, not a World Renowned Thief.
... which, technically, was the same person anyway...
"Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly into the light of the dark black night..."
"So what brings you here tonight?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. Even if his father -was- aware of a potential guest, it was still extremely dangerous of Kid to be here with an officer in the house.
Kid grinned, pulling a shiny gold box with a satiny dark brown ribbon on it out of nothingness and offering it to Hakuba. "Happy Valentine's Day."
Hakuba stared stupidly at the offering in surprise. Usually, on Valentine's Day, at least here in Japan, girls gave the boys chocolates, not chaps giving chocolates. "Um..."
This earned him a laugh from the thief. "Relax. Figured I'd pay you back for all the chocolate you've given me." With a wink, Kid mischievously added "Although, if you want to give me a box on White Day..."
"I see." Hakuba made a conscious effort to relax as he reached out and took the gift. "It is your way of getting more chocolates out of me at a later date."
"Guilty!" Kid sang gleefully.
"Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly into the light of the dark black night..."
"So what's with the music?" Kid changed gears with ease, head motioning towards his parent's bedroom as Hakuba pulled the ribbon off the box.
"Well, it -is- St. Valentine's Day." He explained, setting the ribbon down on the desk and taking the lid off as well. Ooo. Dark chocolate. "And Father's missing Mum. Which means he plays the Beatles."
"Insects?" Kid looked slightly confused. Hakuba wasn't sure if Kid was having him on or not.
"Rock and Roll group from Liverpool, England in the Sixties. Way before our time." He noticed a smirk curling the side of Kid's lips. He was being teased. "Prat."
"You were only waiting for this moment to arise... You were only waiting for this moment to arise..."
He popped one of the chocolates into his mouth, letting the sweet bitterness float over his tongue. Kid grinned broadly in return before leaning forward to steal a kiss.
And some chocolate out of Hakuba's mouth.
"Happy Valentine’s Day." Kid purred before vanishing out of the window once more.
Hakuba licked the remains of the chocolate off his lips. It was sweeter there. Kid had been eating milk chocolates.
"HELP! I need somebody, HELP! Not just anybody, HELP! You know I need someone..." The CD changed tracks.
Hakuba sighed. Enough was really enough. They were what? Nine hours ahead of London? So if it was around ten pm here, it was only about one in the afternoon there. Plenty of time to talk before tea.
"HELP! When I was younger, so much younger than today, I never needed anybody's help in any way..."
He wandered down stairs to the portable phone and grabbed it, idly dialing a long memorized number and allowing it to ring in his ear as he returned upstairs and wandered down the hall to his father's room. He rapped on the door with his knuckles, silently waiting.
The ringing stopped before the door opened. "Hello?" A woman's voice answered.
"Happy St. Valentine's Day." He smiled as the door opened in front of him, Father's confused face peering out at him. He handed the phone over to his father. "It's for you."
"Help me if you can, I'm feeling down, and I do appreciate you being 'round. Help me get my feet back on the ground, won't you please, please help me?"
Father took it with a perplexed expression. "Moshi Moshi?" The mystified expression changed into one of delight as the older man realised who it was. Hakuba gave him a half-wave, wishing him a good conversation as he wandered back down to his room. As he did so, the music faded down to a more reasonable level, then changed tracks in midsong.
"-Picture yourself on a boat in a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies. Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, a girl with kaleidoscope eyes..."
Hakuba chuckled to himself as he shut the door behind him, silently wishing his parents a good St. Valentine's Day.
After all, his had already come through.
"Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, towering over your head. Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, and she's gone...
Lucy in the sky with diamonds..."
-fin-
All songs ( 'Blackbird', 'Help!' and 'Lucy in the sky with Diamonds' ) are property
of the Beatles, we're just borrowing them. The Beatles are known in
Japan, toured there in 1966 and somewhere on the net, someone's translated most
of their songs into Kansai-ben.
The plunnie actually came from Sarah McLaughlin's cover of 'Blackbird', didn't
realise it was the Beatles until we looked up the lyrics. But that meshed with
another plunnie of Hakuba's Dad being a fan of the Beatles and *foom!* there
you go. One St. Valentine's day fic.
-Two months early. Go figure.
And the sad part is, we're really NOT a big Beatle's fan... too much over exposure
when we were younger. blargh. Now mebbe the songs'll get outta our head.
Gold box with Brown Ribbon = Godiva chocolates. Whoo-hoo! XD
