Heartbeat

By Icka! M. Chif

"Yes!" Davis hung up the phone and grinned at Ken. "My parents say it's cool for me to spend the night."

"Not that they had a choice, with the trains closing in less than an hour." Chibimon commented with a slight smirk. Minomon giggled happily and tackled Chibimon in delight.

Ken gave them a slight smile, as he walked up holding some papers. "I've got some good news, some bad news and some non aligned news."

"Good news first." Davis nodded.

"My parents are spending the night with Mom's sister."

"Alright! We have the place to our selves! And you two don't have to hide!"

The two Digimon's wrestling turned into a happy little dance. They liked being able to spend time with their Partners without hiding.

"The bad news is that the apartment manager left a note saying that the complex's heat has been turned off due to a minor mishap in the boiler room with appears to be a stray Chuumon and the exterminator. It'll be fixed tomorrow."

Davis froze. "Bummer." It was getting freezing cold at nights. "And the non-aligned news?"

"Mom was doing the laundry before she left. All the blankets are on the ledge, and-"

"-It was raining when we came in." Davis finished. "And the weather man said it would be dry today! Curse that guy! He's always wrong!"

"How is that 'non-aligned' news?" Chibimon questioned, looking puzzled.

"Not all the blankets got washed." Ken motioned to the large comforter folding across the back of the couch.

Everyone paused, looking at it.

"So we'll all share the blanket!" Minomon suddenly cheered, hopping up and down again. After a second, Chibimon joined him as well, liking the idea. The two humans looked down at the too cheerful Digimon and mildly sweatdropped.

"Are... are you alright with this?" Ken asked, looking a bit out of place.

Davis shrugged. "Even if I wasn't its too late now, the trains have stopped." He commented easily. Then seeing the distanced look on Ken's face, he added "Yeah, it's fine with me."

Ken nodded, looking a slight bit more relaxed, but still uncomfortable. "I think I've got some pajamas that will fit you..." He turned and walked back into toward his room. Davis followed, the two Digimon still bouncing around the kitchen enthusiastically.

"Ow! Hey, watch it Chibimon! It's bad enough with bad Digimon trying to kill me, I don't need my partner trying to kill me too!" Davis protested at the small laughing Digimon wrestling on top of him. He shifted, sending them tumbling over the blanket, and right into Ken who was lying under the blanket as well. It was a tight fit, all of them in Ken's bunk, but it was warmer than sleeping on the floor.

Ken smiled at them, not minding the fact that they were jumping all over him. "Alright, you two. Time for bed." He finally said, lifting up the blanket for them to crawl under. The temperature had just started to noticeably drop in the apartment. Just to the point that it on the uncomfortable side, they had yet to see their breath.

"Wheeeee!" The two dove under the covers, snuggling between them selves and their larger partners with much laughter and wiggling.

"Jeez, you two are in a good mood tonight." Davis commented as they threatened to push him into the wall.

"We're happy." Minomon chirped. "We *like* spending time with each other." Chibimon giggled, tickling Minomon in agreement.

"Alright, settle down, settle down." Ken soothed. "We don't want have to separate you two to get some sleep tonight."

"Yes, Ken." They chirped, looking up at them angelically. Davis snickered. They were so funny when they did that. You just knew that they were up to no good when they did that.

"G'night, Ken. Night, Minomon. Night, Pain-In-The-Butt-Digimon."

"Hey!" Chibimon 'accidentally' kicked him. "'Night, Davis. Night, Ken. Night, Minomon."

"Good night, Davis. Good night, Chibimon. Good Night, Ken." Minomon yawned, pressing up against the dark haired boy affectionately.

"Pleasant dreams, Minomon." Ken whispered, sounding drowsy. "Sleep well, Chibimon. Good night, Davis."

Davis yawned in response, his eyelids dropping over his eyes. He was soooo tired. He was going to fall asleep immediately, he just knew it.

Beside him, Chibimon fell fast asleep and began to snore gently. Minomon then started to snore softly as well, creating a musical counter point to Chibimon.

Outside, the rain pattered against the windows. The wet blankets had already been moved inside, the rain couldn't get to it now.

Ken rolled over, the large comforter shifting. Davis' eye opened a slit to see the darker haired boy buried his face in his pillow.

Stingmon had said that Ken had horrible nightmares at night, right before he and X-Veemon DNA Digivolved into Pailidramon.

Paildramon.

He could remember the first time their Digimon had evolved together. There had been this unreal feeling, almost like an emotion that you could taste. Or reach out and touch. Or even feel. And then he had been able to feel it. It had been a heartbeat.

He had thought it was his at first, and then he realised that it wasn't. It was Ken's. That was what the Digiegg of Miracles had been trying to tell him all along. That Ken had a kind heart.

He knew this. He probably wasn't the smartest of the bunch, but he KNEW this, just like he knew that there would be air there the next time he took a breath. He'd felt it, just assuredly as Wormmon had known it was there when the Kaiser had been in charge and not Ken.

Pondering these thoughts, Davis suddenly realised that he could hear his heartbeat. Or was it Ken's? He opened his eyes a crack, watching the other boy. He couldn't tell.

When he and Ken had been running to put the Crest of Kindness back where it belonged before the entire base blew, the two of them had been moving in perfect synch. He hadn't realised it until later, when the battle was over and their Digimon had been separate again. He'd thought at the time that what they had just done, and what they had just experienced meant that they could be friends.

Being the holder of the Digimetal of Friendship, he should have known that friendships were something that take time. And at that time, he would have never thought that he end up stuck at Ken's house, with only their two Digimon and a single comforter to keep them from freezing in the night.

Ken's soft whisper in the darkness surprised him. "Something wrong, Davis?"

"No. Sorry. Just thinking." He muttered, burrowing his face deeper into the comforter to hide his embarrassment.

"About what?" Ken rolled on to his side, dark eyes watching him.

The question was soft, un-insistant. He could say nothing, roll over and try to go to sleep and Ken wouldn't question it. Or... Or he could find out the answer to his question.

Well, he didn't also have the Digimetal of Courage for his brains and dashing good looks.

"Can I-?" He swallowed and tried again. "Can I try something?" Better just to do it and get it over with than to try to explain.

"Sure." Ken sounded slightly amused, if a bit puzzled.

"Thanks." Carefully, so as not to disturb the two sleeping members of their party, he leaned over and rested the side of his head against Ken's chest. Ken froze, not moving as he did so.

"What are you doing?" Ken asked, puzzlement over ruling amusement.

"Shh. I'm trying to hear your heartbeat." Through the blanket, he could just make out Ken's muffled heartbeat. It was different. Slower than his. "Dang it."

He sat back up, then burrowed back under the blanket with a shiver. It was really cold in the room now.

"Why?" Ken asked with equal amounts of confusion and amusement.

Davis shifted to face him. "Remember when Stingmon and X-Veemon Digivolved together? Well, I could feel your heartbeat. Like it was right there next to mine, beating in synch. I was wondering if it was still the same." He confessed, hoping that didn't sound too weird.

"I... felt something then too." Ken admitted thoughtfully. "Was it?"

He sighed. "Nope. You can listen for yourself if you want to."

"Uh..." Ken faltered, the statement obviously taking him by surprise. Davis rolled his eyes.

"It's not like I'm a girl or anything." He muttered. Sheesh.

"That's rather obvious." Ken commented back. Before he could retort to that, a hand reached out from the comforter, brushing his face.

"What are you doing?" Davis asked, resisting the urge to flinch away as the fingers gently trailed down his cheek and past his jaw. Ken had cold hands.

"I'm trying to find your pulse. It's in your neck."

"Oh." Davis held still as fingers carefully pressed against his neck. "Well?"

"Yours is faster." Ken finally admitted, the icy hand withdrawing.

Davis nodded. "Yeah. That's what I found too. Guess we're only in synch when Paildramon is present. Oh, well. That answers that."

"Yeah." The amusement was back in Ken's voice.

"Well-" Davis yawned, his eyelids drooping again. "-Goodnight."

Ken echoed his yawn with one of his own. "'Night." He murmured, burrowing his face hack into the pillow again.

That was the last thing Davis was aware of before falling asleep.

Chibimon giggled. "Shhhh." Minomon whispered back, quieting his friend. "You'll wake them."

"Sorry." Chibimon whispered back, merriment in his voice. He hid his mouth behind his hands in an attempt to smother his laughter. It didn't work.

"What's so funny?"

"Shhh. Lissen! Whadda hear?"

Minomon fell quiet. It had gotten even colder in the room and everyone had ended up getting all mashed together. They had started out with the two small Digimon sandwiched on a pillow between their Partners. They were now curled up on the crevice created by the two larger humans sleeping back to back.

"Rain... snoring... your giggling..." Minomon reported back faithfully. "Oh, wait... someone's tummy just growled..."

"And a heartbeat." Chibimon supplied, trying to smother his giggles again.

"So?" Minomon blinked, thinking it over. "Oh. Ohhhh!" Understanding dawned as he listened again.

Chibimon giggled, wiggling happily. "They're in synch!" This time, Minomon joined him in the laughter. They both quickly muffled it, not wanting to wake up their Partners.

"Think we should tell them?" Minomon whispered eagerly.

There was a pause for about 3 of the sleeping humans heartbeats.

"Nahhhh." They chorused, curling back up to go to sleep.

Fin.
