By day, Kuroba Kaito is a hyperactive high school student and magician, living a happy, carefree life with his mother and his best friend, Nakamori Aoko.
By night, however, he sheds his masks and dons a white suit and monocle to become the Kaitou Kid, jewel thief extraordinaire.
The Kaitou Kid is notorious, not just for delivering notices to the public and police of what he's going to take and when, or for taking his targets despite the most sophisticated security systems human ingenuity can devise, but also for returning what he takes a few days later, unharmed. That last is, of course, what drives the police force, headed by Aoko's father, crazy.
They don't know that Kaito is in fact the son of the first Kaitou Kid, who was murdered by a criminal organisation that he had once been hired by, and that his heists are not for gain but an attempt to lure his father's murderers out of hiding - an attempt that seems to be getting mixed results so far...

Highly phobic of fish (Ichthyophobia). Favourite subject is Gymnastics/ P.E. Popular in class, but the girls get angry at him for picking the locks on the girl's changing room. Brings odd newspapers to school with him (Ono, Oshima, Azai) Father died 8 years ago, raised by his mother. Can ski, can't ice skate. Not very good at playing billiards. Highly pranksterish but very smart. Loves Chocolate Ice cream.
Childhood friend of Aoko. She's commented that he's cold but sweet to her. Roboto-san (as Kaito) said that was because he likes her.
In Katakana, his name literally means 'Clover Kite'. (クロバ . カイト)

	Police Information from Black Star (DC Vol. 16, File 6-9): Older Gentleman. First appeared in Paris 18 years ago. Worked for 10 years, then disappeared for 8 years, recently made a reappearance. Gained the name 'KID' from an inspiring authour who blurred '1412' together to form letters the letters 'K-I-D'.
	Police Information from The Blue Wonder (DC Vol. 44, File 7-10): He is assisted by either an old man and/or a young woman.
	Police Information from (DC Vol. 53, File 1-4): Kid re-draws the caricature of his face every time he sends out a heist notice. That way if the police get a notice with the same face as a previous notice, they know it's a fake.
	General Information From The Moon Ghost (DC Vol. 55, File 6-9) : Kudo Yuusaku is the parent of the name 'KID' after seeing a newspaper report scribble down '1412' and read it as 'KID'.
	Police Information from Third Movie: 134 Heists, 15 heists in 12 other countries including America, France and Germany. Total of 152 jewels stolen worth 38,725,000,000 yen.
	Master of disguise and costuming as well as Magic. Nature will come to his aid if he needs it. Uses pink smoke/sleep gas. Green charm on the end of his monocle has a 4-leaf clover on it. Shoots left handed about a third of the time, right handed most of the time. Early heist notes are straightforward, stating where, when and what. Later heist notes became riddles for the police to solve. Favourite Quote: "Heart and Smile are the most important things. And don't forget to show Poker Face too."

'Toichi' means
'Stealing One' or 'Thief the First'

Deceased. The Original Kaitou Kid. Kaito's father, killed by Snake/Jackal 8 years ago in a massive explosion on stage during "Kuroba Toichi's Great Escape" in what appeared to be an accident. (MK ch.1, page 33, top of page, behind Jii)
One of the 'Seven Knights' Kudo Yukiko has met. He taught her and Sharon Vineyard (Vermouth) disguise and role making.

'Chikage' means '1000 Shadows'.

Kaito's Mom. Name is listed on the credits of the Magic Kaito Special. In the manga, she's only seen during the first chapter, making dinner. She's visiting a Magic Show in Las Vegas in the Special.

Possibly also known as ' ファントムレディ- / Phantom Lady', the Showa Era (before 1989) 'Lady of 20 Faces', a female phantom theif that retired 2 years before the Kaitou Kid's first appearance.

Yada Kouji 矢田耕司 (Magic Kaito Special)

Worked for Toichi. Calls Kaito 'Botchama', a very old term for 'master's son'. First appeared acting as the Kaitou Kid, wearing full-faced (opera?) mask to hide his features and mirrors all over his body to appear invisible. Now assists Kaito.
Runs the 'Blue Parrot' Billiard Hall in an earlier work of Gosho's. Believes that playing pool should be about having fun, not age and money.

'Ginzo' means 'Silver Three' or 'Silver the Third'

Inspector in the Metropolitan Police Department Investigative Group 2. He's been chasing the thief since he was 20. Terrible temper, passionate about capturing Kid. Gets depressed when there haven't been any heists for a while. Seen smoking a pipe in earlier manga, a cigar later. Acts kind of like an uncle towards Kaito. He drinks whiskey without ice.
In 'Black Star', he (loudly) requests that the thief be referred to as 'Kaitou Kid' instead of 'Kaitou 1412' to cause less confusion.

Inspector Nakamori Ginzo's only daughter, Kaito's childhood friend. Mother unknown but not there. Aoko was named after her birthstone, the Sapphire, making it September. A calm sweet girl most of the time, but with a massive temper. Hates Kid for making a fool of her father. Can't ski. Uses a mop or a broom as a primary weapon for chasing Kaito when he goes too far in his jokes (possible Naginata skills). Kaito likes to flip her skirt, once she chased him around wearing fish-print underwear. Very happy when drunk, although she can't play the piano.
She met Kaito when they were about Kindergarten age, waiting for her father in front of a Clock Tower. Kaito gave her a flower and they've been friends ever since.

Note: A bunch of us (Becky, Ysabet, Icka and a few other ficcers) were discussing her birthday one night in chat, for fic purposes. The 26th was decided because it's after the 22and - the Virgo/Libra cusp, Hakuba's a Virgo and we didn't want two of the same sign. It was that or the 25th, but we flipped a coin and the 26th won.

Koizumi Akako [17]

'Akako' means
'Red Child'

Voice Actor: Megumi Hayashibara 林原めぐみ

She's a Red Witch/Sorceress. All men, with the exception of Kid/Kuroba, fall in love with her. The girls think she's beautiful. Speaks with Lucifer. Used a voo-doo doll on Kid, a cursed necklace on Nakamori, mixes various potions. Uses a scrying mirror or threatens her crystal ball with a mallet to tell her the future. Appears to be very wealthy, has her own castle (with dungeon!) and an oni-like servant. Loves the snake motif. Does ride a flying broom.
Attempted to kill Kid at one point, has since changed her mind. Stole a jewel to prevent Kid/Kuroba's secret from being revealed and will attempt to help him if she believes him in trouble. Flirts a bit with him in class, although he thinks she's kinda creepy. Aoko appears to views her as a friend.
Random note:
In Conan vs Kid vs Yaiba OVA, Akako makes an appearance as a fortune teller, reading a crystal ball and generally freaking the Shonen Tantei out. The snakes on her shoulder pads move (and sweatdrop!)

'Hakuba' means

First Appearance: Vol. 3 Ch. 2 - A Great Detective Takes the Stage
Voice Actor: 石田彰, Ishida Akira

Father is the Metropolitan Chief of Police, Mother is from Britain, where he has been going to school. Came to Japan for the specific purpose of catching Kid. His most prized possession is a pocket watch he carries with him that looses 0.001 seconds per year. Has a hawk named 'Watson'. Is also very proud of his billiard playing ability. (note: billiards is not pool). Was seen in Paris for a Vacation.
Has an Grandfather who runs the Hakuba Research Institute. Hakuba family crest looks like an inverted Pontiac symbol, a prancing white horse on a black shield.
Originally seen wearing a Deerstalker Cap and an Inverness Coat like Sherlock Holmes during cases, now usually seen in a (badly coloured) suit and tie. Has solved roughly 500 cases as of volume 54.
As of the 10th movie, Hakuba has been studying Criminal Science in London.

Famous tag lines: "Hitotsu Dake Kikitai..." (I want to ask one thing...) "Naze konna koto o...?" (Why did you....?)

Hakuba's hawk, who gets agitated around blood. He got Watson in England.

Icka Note: After some research, due to size and colouring we're pretty certain Watson is a Female Eurasian Sparrow hawk, which are found across Europe and Asia, as well as Britain and Japan. It is still open for debate and interpretation.

Kid's ultimate goal to find, what he's sworn to destroy to keep out of the hands of his father's killers.
Pandora is hidden inside of a larger gem. If you hold the stone containing Pandora to the moonlight while the Volley Comet passes (once every 10,000 years) it will glow red and cry tears of immortality.

Notes: 10,000 years ago is 8,000 BC, the Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age. Primitive writing was developed in Mesopotamia at this time. Draw your own conclusions.

Notes about Location:

The name of the city or prefecture that MK takes place is never actually stated. The school is 'Ekoda High', [江古田] but there is some debate on if 'Ono', where several heists take place, is the city's actual name.
Icka uses Ekoda as the city name as a personal preference, but until we are told otherwise, neither is wrong.
Ekoda High is also the same school the characters from Yaiba attend.
In the Magic Kaito Special, Nakamori works out of the Minato Police Department.
